Smartphone segment sales zooms, Nokia leader | Garnter Survey

Gartner Inc. says that the mobile sales are up by 16.5% when compared to the sales at the same time in the previous year. And interestingly the smartphone segments’ sales rose by a whopping 74% for 2011 on a year-on-year basis, with its share being 25% in the total market sales.

Nokia yet again retained its position as the highest sales per annum but losing its market share of the increase.
A total of 428.7 million units were sold in this quarter of the year 2011, a rise of 16.5 percent from the second quarter of 2010, according to the Gartner Inc.
The Gartner Inc. also said that the sales might be affected because of the possible shortage of components following the Japanese earthquake. This has shortened the sales by approximately 6 million units.

The sales of Smartphones have risen exceptionally, giving the credit to the advertisements given by the companies. A total of 75 percent of increase is seen as compared to the year-on-year sales, taking a share of 16 percent in the overall sales.
Nokia having a market share of 22.8 followed Samsung and LG.
One major change in this leader board is that the Research In Motion (RIM) fell by one position where by it is replaced by a Japan based mobile company, ZTE. The RIM is now in 6th position.
Only Apple could register an net doubling of its sales for this quarter. Nokia’s share in market fell due to the steep increase in the usage of the Android-based phones, which led to the fall of the sales in the phones using Symbian OS. Apple Inc’s iOS has also seen a growth in its sales. All other Operating Systems (OS) of the smartphone segment has experienced a fall in its market share.
